Culicoides (Beltranmyia) Culicoides salinarius (Kieffer)

Diagnosis & Notes:

male genitalia

It differs from circumscriptus in that the dark spot just distal to vein R-M is absent, and the border to vein CU2 is dark. A single spermatheca; AR 1.34-1.41, SD 3-14 (occasionally absent from 4, 5 or 6). The figure of the wing is from Edwards (1939) and of the genitalia from Kremer (1966)

Biology:

Dzhafarov (1964) records this species as attacking humans from April until November.

Distribution:

Found mostly in coastal areas, and especially in saline habitats and salt marshes, but also inland, throughout Europe to Estonia, Finland and Russia; also Algeria.

Medical and Veterinary Importance:

Nothing known.
