Diagnosis & Notes:
The name algecirensis was elevated to a senior synonym by Szadziewski (1986) who also designated a neotype; however, the name puncticollis was reinstated by a decision of the I.C.Z.N. (Anon, 1991). It is very similar to nubeculosus, but the wing markings tend to be less extensive and paler, and the single spermatheca is banana- or sausage-shaped, not ovoid. The female AR is 0.69-0.95; the SD is 3,8-10. The male genitalia also differ, particularly in the form of the aedeagus. The figures of wing and genitalia are from Edwards (1939); and of the spermatheca from Kremer (1966).
Biology:
Found around livestock, breeding in contaminated mud.
Distribution:
Infrequent in northern Europe, but much commoner in the south, North Africa and around the Mediterranean to the Middle East.
Medical and Veterinary Importance:
A vector of Onchocerca of cattle, and in view of its association with livestock a potential vector of bluetongue virus.
