Culicoides (Culicoides) grisescens (Edwards)

Diagnosis & Notes:

The large size, vague wing markings, and the absence of a dark spot in the cubital cell will distinguish this species, although some other of the subgenus ae very similar. The male has the posterior margin of the ninth tergite convex, without a central notch. The female AR 1.08-1.19; SD 3,11-15. The figures are from Edwards (1939).

Biology:

In the U.K.it is most common in upland regions. Dzhafarov (1964) records this species biting man and other animals from May to August; Downes (1955) made observations of its swarming behaviour.

Distribution:

From Britain through northern Europe to Russia.

Medical and Veterinary Importance:

Nothing known.
