Culicoides (Oecacta) duddingstoni (Kettle & Lawson)

Diagnosis & Notes:

male genitalia

A species with greyish wings, the second radial cell dark, and pale spots at the ends of cells r5, m1, m2 and cu which are cut by the wing margin. The female AR is 1.20-1.25; the SD is 3-15. Somewhat like C. festivipennis, but without the dark markings of the mesonotum, and lacking the pale spot straddling vein M1 just below the pale spot distal to the second radial cell. The ninth sternite membrane of the male bears a few spicules.

Biology:

The type series was bred from mud from the edges of Scottish lochs.

Distribution:

From U.K. and northern Europe through France and southern Europe to Poland, Rumania and Russia.

Medical and Veterinary Importance:

Nothing known.
